A male western lowland gorilla was recently born at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, causing the staff to celebrate since he is the first gorilla born there in 9 years. The newborn was named Moke, which means ‘’little one’’. Video footage captured the mama gorilla, Calaya, 15, kissing her baby on the lips shortly after giving birth. Calaya has been paired with Baraka, a 26-year-old, 450-pound gorilla, since her arrival at the zoo three years ago. This birth is significant because the wild western lowland gorilla population has been endangered for the past 20-25 years. It was truly a great moment to witness. Watch the video below and share with your family and friends.
