It’s always disheartening to learn about families relinquishing their dog to a shelter. While they may provide a justification for their actions, it is widely agreed upon that dogs should never be callously abandoned in such a manner.
Cobe, a two-year-old dog, found himself in this predicament, and the motive behind his presence at the shelter is truly saddening. It appears that his owners were enraged by his tendency to rummage through the garbage, leading them to leave him at a high-risk shelter.
Coby exhibited a state of confusion and fear upon arrival, simply sitting and fixating on the wall. He avoided making eye contact with any of the compassionate volunteers at the Fairfield County Shelter in South Carolina.
It is understandable why the dog lacked trust in humans.
“He is extremely frightened… much like a wild dog would be… but not once did he display aggression or attempt to bite,” shared Samira El-Hage, a volunteer at the shelter, on Facebook. “He sought refuge under the raised bed or attempted to flee when taken outside. He persistently chewed on the leash and avoided making eye contact with us.”
Soon after the post appeared on Facebook, it quickly gained traction and resonated with many individuals. People empathized with the dog’s situation, including Leigh Maddox, the founder of Compassion For Pets Of Delaware.
Maddox was determined to prevent Coby from spending another day at the shelter. She recognized what he required: a loving forever home. Additionally, Coby needed to learn fundamental commands, as his previous owners neglected to provide him with proper training.
Pilots N Paws assisted in relocating Colby to Delaware. They are an organization dedicated to aiding animals in finding their forever homes and facilitating their journey. In Delaware, he was introduced to Olivia Fritz, his new foster mother.
According to Olivia’s account to The DoDo, “Coby was tightly curled up in the seat, making it challenging for my husband to remove him. Once he was out of the plane, he became limp with fear… He was so withdrawn that he didn’t react to anything or anyone.”
Fritz believes that Colby wasn’t abandoned at the shelter solely because he scavenged garbage. The family neglected him to such an extent that they didn’t even prevent him from having accidents indoors.
Colby has a challenging journey ahead of him, but he is gradually making progress and working towards his recovery.
“I believed that by simply embracing and showering him with kisses, he would comprehend that he was cherished… but it goes beyond that,” expressed Fritz to The Dodo. “I hope that the trauma he endured can be healed, but it will not happen overnight.”
Colby’s condition has significantly improved under proper care. We have no doubt that he will thrive now that he can leave his past behind him.
