In an attempt to promote expeditions to the Arctic organized by hunting companies, trophy hunters are seen posing alongside slain polar bears.
According to reports, an alarming number of 5,000 polar bears have been killed as trophies for sport in the Canadian region of the Arctic Circle in recent years.
Even more concerning is the fact that trophy hunters view the opportunity to hunt these magnificent creatures as something extraordinary, and hunting firms shamelessly capitalize on their despicable desires.
Worldwide Trophy Adventures is a prime example of such a company, even extending the offer of a second 10-day hunting opportunity in case a polar bear is not successfully hunted during the initially scheduled hunt.
According to the company’s website, their hunting package includes the assistance of a seasoned Inuit polar bear guide accompanied by a dog team for the entire duration of the hunt, along with the provision of “field preparation of the trophy.” The hunting endeavor culminates with the “harvesting” of a polar bear.
In 2008, the United States implemented a ban on the importation of polar bear trophies due to their endangered status. However, Norway remains the sole country in the world to have entirely prohibited the hunting of polar bears. According to the Daily Mirror, Canadian Inuits, who historically hunted bears for sustenance and clothing, are now selling their licenses to trophy hunters.
The cost quoted for an American to participate in a 12-day expedition and kill a polar bear amounts to $1043.83 ($1,375.50 Canadian) in addition to the price of the actual hunt, which exceeds $44,000.
I find it incomprehensible how anyone can morally justify the hunting and slaying of such a magnificent and noble creature, particularly considering the threats they face from climate change and the scarcity of food.
I for one hate the idea that people kill polar bears simply so they can have a bear’s head above their fire or a rug on their floor.
Share this article if you, too, take a stand against the abhorrent practise of trophy hunting.
