Shane’s life took a turn for the worse after parting ways with Mongo, but after a span of 8 years, Mongo reappeared just when Shane needed him the most.
Eight years ago, Shane Adams experienced the loss of his treasured horse, Mongo.
Mongo didn’t meet his demise.
Instead, he disappeared, joining a group of wild mustangs.
On March 31, 2014, Shane found himself on a camping excursion in the West Desert, situated two hours away from Salt Lake City.
While soundly asleep in his tent, he abruptly awoke to a commotion outside during the early hours of the morning.
He stumbled upon Mongo, his horse with a mix of quarter and half-Percheron bloodline, attempting to break free and join a herd of wild mustangs.
Shane attempted to chase after him. But how could a person on foot match the speed of a galloping horse?
He exerted his utmost effort but ceased his pursuit when he found himself trapped in a snowstorm.
Nevertheless, Shane remained unfazed.
“I believed he would simply return. That was his nature—he never strayed too far. I never imagined he would be gone forever,” Shane recounted.
But Mongo failed to return.
For the following three years, Shane dedicated his efforts to searching for Mongo.
He shared the news of Mongo’s disappearance with others.
He reached out to the local brand inspector and the Bureau of Land Management in Utah, seeking their assistance.
Additionally, both he and his father, Scott, devoted every weekend to combing the area in search of Mongo.
But after three years of fruitless searching for any trace of Mongo, he made a difficult decision.
Shane called off the search.
Considering the significant time that had passed, it was plausible that Mongo had passed away, which could explain their inability to locate him.
Shane resumed his former position as a foreman at a prominent construction company.
The demands of his job required his full presence and active engagement, leaving him with limited time to continue the quest for Mongo.
“You can’t oversee a multimillion-dollar project and be absent, dedicating only two days a week to chasing after wild mustangs,” Shane remarked.
Since Mongo vanished, Shane’s life has been a series of challenges.
He experienced a severe car accident that resulted in a brain injury. Additionally, he went through a divorce and lost his home.
Furthermore, Shane had to cope with the loss of his father, Scott.
Life had been exceptionally difficult for him.
However, a positive change was about to occur.
In September 2022, Shane received an unexpected Facebook message from an employee of BLM Utah. Astonishingly, Mongo had been located! How could this be? Shane found it hard to believe that Mongo was still alive.
“Mongo was brought in during the final day of gathering at Dugway Proving Ground—an area with high-security measures in Utah—after BLM Utah was given permission to extend their gather due to an excess number of horses,” explained Lisa Reid, a public affairs specialist at BLM Utah.
They observed an anomaly among the horses—a horse that stood out from the rest.
Unlike the other horses, this particular horse exhibited no signs of resistance or aggression. Its behavior and appearance indicated that it was a domesticated horse.
Their expert in equine matters strongly suspected that it could be Mongo.
Their intuition proved correct—it was indeed Mongo.
Their suspicions were confirmed when the local brand inspector identified Mongo’s distinct brand on his left shoulder.
They promptly contacted Shane, who eagerly embarked on a four-hour drive to reunite with his loyal companion.
Mongo’s physical transformation was unmistakable, having shed 400 lbs, but Shane instantly recognized his beloved horse upon seeing him.
The most remarkable aspect was that Mongo had retained all the knowledge and training that Shane had imparted to him.
Shane was overjoyed by their reunion.
He expressed that this was the first ray of sunshine in his life during the previous two years.
Shane eagerly anticipated introducing Mongo to his children and indulging him with his favorite delicacy, Sour Patch Kids.
