Shane had a hard time walking due to his hooves before he was rescued.
Shane worked as a workhorse during the first part of his life.
In addition to working long hours, this magnificent animal was treated cruelly and forced to work in harsh conditions.
After Colby’s Crew Rescue rescued Shane, they discovered that he was very underweight for a horse his size.
Due to neglect, Shane’s hooves had grown to such an extent that he struggled to walk properly. They were so long that they resembled flippers, which made it difficult for him to walk without pain. Fortunately, Colby’s Crew Rescue stepped in and saved Shane from the kill pen at the earliest opportunity.
They discovered that despite being 10 years old, the horse had a lot of energy left in him, and they only needed to restore his hooves.
Shane’s hooves were in such poor condition that he had difficulty lifting them. Even just lifting one of them for grooming was painful. However, he managed to endure his first trimming, and the difference was astonishing.
As soon as Shane stepped outside to test his new feet, it was evident that he could walk much better.
Witnessing him run for the first time brought tears to the eyes of the rescue team.
Shane was overjoyed and grateful to be in the care of people who showed him love and kindness.
“He’s one of the most appreciative horses I’ve ever met,” remarked a member of the crew.
Colby’s Crew Rescue was established in 2020 after Colby, who was saved from a kill pen in Pennsylvania in August, was rescued.
The kill pen is where workhorses are sent after they can no longer work.
The rescuers understood that they couldn’t just stop at saving Colby, so they began the Big John project, an initiative aimed at ensuring that no workhorse is left to die after a life of being used without consent.
Since its inception, Colby’s Crew Rescue has saved roughly 80 horses, with the majority being ex-workhorses, and also rescues other magnificent animals like mules.

“We strive to rescue horses that have no other choice but to be saved by us,” the rescue team stated. “Many of them require physical or mental rehabilitation. They simply need to be showered with love and reminded that people can be kind.”
While the rescue group’s ranch is open to the horses, Colby’s Crew Rescue is dedicated to finding their rescues forever homes.
“It’s a very emotional and fulfilling experience to witness them improve,” shared a crew member. “We have put our hearts and souls into saving horses. It is worth it to look back and realize how many we have saved.”
