Meet Mother, a chimpanzee who is 59 years old and holds the position of matriarch within the colony residing at the Royal Burgers Zoo in Arnhem, the Netherlands.
The colony has gained recognition for being the subject of pioneering research on primate behavior, leading to the publication of the book “Chimpanzee Politics” by Frans De Waal.
In April 2016, as her life neared its conclusion, Mother was in a frail state, unwell, and unable to consume food. Upon hearing the news, Jan van Hooff, co-founder of the colony and professor of behavioral biology, made a poignant visit to Mother to bid his final farewell. Having known her since 1972, the two shared a profound connection, and van Hooff instantly recognized her.
Initially, Mother, in her feeble state, appeared unaware of Jan’s presence, seemingly accepting her approaching demise. However, when the moment came and she recognized him, the emotions that surfaced were evident and truly captivating.
Sadly, one week later, Mama peacefully passed away.
